Janmashtmi or Krishna Janmashtami, or Gokulashtami, is a renowned Hindu festival celebrates as birthday of Lord Krishna. According to the Hindi calendar, the festival falls in Sravana month. People pray Lord Krishna by keeping fast for the entire day. It is believed that Lord Krishna took birth at 12 am midnight thus, people break their fast at 12 am. Temples are beautifully decorated; drama and dance enactments take place showcasing the life of Lord Krishna through ‘Krishna Lilas’. In addition to this, special delicacies form an integral part of the festival.

Unique Ways to Celebrate Janmashtmi in Different States of India

Janmashtami, Krishnashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Gokulashtami, or Srikrishna Jayanti, is the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. The entire nation celebrates this day in a different way and style. It is a vibrant festival celebrated with enthusiasm and supreme faith in God. Here are the distinct ways to celebrate Janmashtmi:

  • Mathura, Uttar Pradesh: Mathura is considered as the birth place of Krishna. Being the janmabhoomi, the celebration takes place here at the next level. Temples are decorated with flowers and streets are crowded with devotees, air is filled with the fragrance of roses and special savories prepared in the market leave every part of Mathura with positive vibes. From Ras Leelas to other acts of Lord Krishna portray very well. The Balroop is cradled in every home and temples in Mathura.
  • Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh: Janmashtmi is a unique celebration in Vrindavan. It is celebrated with deep devotion at this town of Vrindavan. Vrindavan is one kilometer away from Mathura where Krishna spent his childhood and performed activities such as stealing butter and Raas Leela with Gopis. On this special day, several rituals are performed highlighting the life of Lord Krishna. The Janmashtmi celebration takes place for 10 days in Vrindavan when the whole town hears the sound of mridang, bells, and bhajans. . A large number of devotees collect in the town for celebrating the birth anniversary of their favorite God.  
  • Maharashtra: Similar to Mathura and Vrindavan, Maharashtra also celebrates the day with merrymaking activities. The state is known for conducting Dahi Handi contest in huge pandals. An earthen pot filled with curd and white butter hung on massive height and people make a pyramid to break the pot. This ritual is inspired by Krishna’s act of stealing butter with his friends. In fact this event is sponsored by various companies and politicians and a huge amount of cash is also given to the winner.
  • Dwarka, Gujarat: Dwarka is Lord Krishna’s own kingdom. This part of the country witnesses Janmashtmi in a fascinating way. People have been celebrating this day from five thousand years ago. As per the legends, Dwarka is submerged in Arabian sea after the God has left for the heavenly abode. Today the city feels the life with ringing bells and conch during Janmashtami. Every year a huge number of devotees gather and get immersed in the bhakti of Lord Krishna.
  • Odisha: An exemplary temple, Jagannath is straightaway connected to Lord Krishna. According to a legend, Lord Krishna’s heart was tied with a wooden log and immersed in ocean. Lord Krishna’s heart is found in Jagannath temple. Besides Jagannath temple, other temples are beautifully decorated and Jeuda Bhog is also prepared. It is believed that Jeuda Bhog ease the labor pain while giving birth to Lord Krishna. The deities in different temples are adorned with beautiful clothes and jewelry. And during midnight, Ladoo Gopal is kept in a cradle decorated with flowers. Mantras are chanted and processions are organized and religious songs are sung. Here famous Rath Yatra is also commended.
  • Goa: In spite of Portuguese settlement, Goa is known for Janmashtmi celebration.  The beach place of this state has an affinity with Yadavas, the clan belongs to Krishna. Goa has a temple where Krishna and Devaki are worshipped. It is the only temple in India devoted to Krishna and Devaki. The temple is consisted of an idol of Devaki in a standing position with a baby Krishna. The temple is situated in Marcel about 17 km away from Panaji see the long queues of devotees.
  • Jaipur: Jaiput has some well-known temples such as Krishna Balaram temple and Govind Devji temple. These two temples celebrate the Janmashtmi exactly in the same way as celebrated in Vrindavan’s Krishna Balaram temple.  Govind Devji temple is situated in the City Palace. In this palace, the main idol of Lord Krishna was brought by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II from Vrindavan. It is believed that this idol was made by Krishna’s great-grandson, Bajranabh. Temples are beautifully decorated, being the indispensable part of Gokulashtmi. And both the temples are fully packed during the festival as devotees come from different parts to take blessings of Lord Krishna.

Besides the places mentioned above, many other places such as Manipur, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Udupi in Karnataka also celebrate the festival in a unique way.
