Overview of IIT Patna 

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) admissions are open at the Indian Institute of Technology Patna for July 2023. PhD students may be admitted to the Institute under different categories, including regular, full-time, and sponsored. The deadline for submitting an online application form is given below. Interested candidates should fill out the online application form and submit it by the stated deadline. Candidates wishing to apply to more than one government department must submit a separate application for each department. Eligibility Criteria

In Engineering for a PhD.

  • Applicants should have received a 6.5 CPI or a 60% mark in an Engineering degree. Alternately
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology is required with a minimum CPI of 8.0 or 75% of marks; a bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology is required. Alternatively,
  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an IIT in a relevant field with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
  • A Master’s degree in science with at least 7.5 or 70% CPI in a relevant field.

In science for the PhD.

  • Candidates must possess a PhD or master’s degree in science with a combined point average of 6.5 or 60% or higher.
  • Minimum 6.5 CPI or 60% of marks in engineering/technology with a relevant area of focus. Alternatively,
  • Applicants must have at least a 7.0-grade point average in Engineering/Technology.
  • The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology from IIT/ IISc and have at least seventy-five percent of marks at the 8.0 level or higher.

PhD in Humanities & Social Sciences

  • Students should possess an MPhil or master’s degree in a field of arts, commerce, science, or management and have achieved a minimum score of 55%. Alternately
  • 6.5 or 60% marks on a CPI of 6.5, showing mastery in Engineering, Technology, or Design in a relevant area. Alternately
  • Applicants must have at least a 7.0-grade point average in Engineering/Technology.
  • A minimum of 7.5 CPI points or 70% marks in an Engineering or Technology degree (from any institute other than IITs/IISc) in the relevant field.

Students can apply directly (no written test required)

Outstanding students and Full-Time fellows (institute fellows) may be admitted directly to the PhD program (without written test). There may be an opportunity to waive the written examination for candidates who meet one of the following requirements:

  • A CPI/CGPA of 8/10 and above are required for candidates who complete their B. Tech from IITs within the last five years in the relevant discipline.
  • The candidate must have just completed their master’s degree at IITs/IISc within the last five years in the respective discipline with a CPI/CGPA of 8.5/10 and above.

  • Apply with the application fee of INR 300 (for general/EWS/OBC (male) and INR 150 for ST/SC/female candidates

Details of the course 

The number of required courses (minimum) for a particular discipline depends upon the candidate’s highest degree earned.

  • An MTech, ME, MPhil, or equivalent degree requires the successful completion of at least two courses and receiving at least 12 credit hours.
  • We are obtaining an M.Sc., M.A., MCA, MBA or M.Ed. Requires at least four courses and 24 credits.
  • To obtain an M.Com/equivalent/BTech, the candidate must complete six courses and 36 credits.
  • Minimum 50% of course content must be associated with the candidate’s research area in all cases mentioned above.
  • The credit course is mandatory for all research scholars. Students of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences can take Essential English.

A description of the PhD course structure 

  • Applicants should be advised about which programs they should enrol in by their supervisors.
  • Each candidate’s performance will determine their final letter grade.
  • To evaluate candidates’ qualifications and test their academic preparation, examinations are conducted over 18 months (ME/MTech/MPhil degrees) and 24 months (BE/BTech/MA/MSc degrees).
  • Following their comprehensive examination, candidates are required to present the Registration Seminar (RS).
  • After receiving DC’s approval of their synopsis, candidates must submit copies of their thesis to the academic section within two months.
  • An oral presentation of the thesis is required during the viva voce.

Graduates of IIT Patna’s PhD program must have GATE or NET scores and must attend an interview. Written tests and interviews will be conducted based on the TOEFL scores of international applicants. 

Exceptions to the rule

If a candidate meets the following criteria, then they will be exempt from taking the written test.

  • The candidates must have gained a CPI of 8/10 or higher in the relevant stream of their BTech degree at IIT. 
  • Bachelor’s degree from an IIT/IISc, master’s degree within the last five years, and CGPA of 8 or 10 in relevant field are required.

There will be a 5% relaxation of eligibility requirements for candidates from SC/ST categories. According to government rules, seats are reserved in admissions.  

The university admits new students.
